  11.  If you are going to use Windows NotePad to print this README.TXT,
  12.  you will have to go under <File>, <Page Setup>, and set <Left>=0,
  13.  <Right>=0, <Top>=0, <Bottom>=0.

  15.  FaxMail for Windows adds a <Fax> button to all Windows Programs giving you
  16.  access to all the Fax Modems and Fax Machines in the world making them
  17.  become your printers. Before printing to a Fax Machine or upon receiving a
  18.  Fax, you can use the optional Zoom Edit to add graphic, text (any font,
  19.  any size), or use your mouse to sign the Fax. FaxMail has hundreds of
  20.  useful features available such as OCR, Fax to PCX BreakUp, Dynamic
  21.  view/edit Cover Page, FaxBook Import, Windows Dynamic All Class Fax
  22.  Driver, and Tech-Support... The Optical Character Recognition (OCR), will
  23.  convert FAX into text that can be read by all editors and Word Processors;
  24.  yet retains the original unchanged FAX.  FaxMail for Windows attaches
  25.  itself to and becomes a part of the actual Microsoft Windows environment,
  26.  thereby appending itself to all system menus and adds its features to all
  27.  Windows Applications. The quality of the output is laser quality.  You can
  28.  import up to 1000 name and phone numbers into each FaxBook (Phone Book) at
  29.  a time from any xBase data base program, and you can have as many FaxBooks

  75.  We are working full time on improving and upgrading FaxMail for Windows.
  76.  So...before you install, look at the date on the files inside of the
  77.  ZIPed file.  If the date is more than a week old, you may want to call
  78.  and get the latest version.  We release minor versions about once a week
  79.  and major versions when appropriate.  To get the latest version of
  80.  FaxMail for Windows, first try these places.  We try to keep the latest

  112.  If you have a registered version of FaxMail for Windows you may *NOT*

  115.  FaxMail for Windows is shareware.  This means you have a chance to
  116.  test the performance FaxMail for Windows before committing yourself
  117.  to buying it.  You have a one month legal trial.  After one month you
  118.  must pay for FaxMail for Windows or discontinue its use.

  126. IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
  127.  If you are currently using another Modem-Program, remember that they can
  128.  not run concurrently.  To disable it may be as easy as not loading it or
  129.  you may have to remove one or more lines from your AUTOEXEC.BAT,
  130.  CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI.  Typing rem ahead of a line in your
  131.  AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS will disable it.  Example:

  146.  If your old Fax-Program loads from the Windows-StartUp-Group as you enter
  147.  Windows, you will have to move it's ICON out of your Windows-StartUp-Group
  148.  by grabbing it and dropping it in another Group.

  150.  If you load the wrong Fax/Modem-Driver the worst that can be expected
  151.  to happen is that the Fax/Modem-Driver might not load or the program might
  152.  hang or fail to operate, and perhaps your modem might be left in Fax mode
  153.  and require manual resetting(turn it off and back on).  Since information
  154.  about models that don't work with this program will aid in correcting
  155.  unsuspected problems, we would appreciate any information you can give

  167. FAX/MODEM INSTALLATION:
  168. (IMPORTANT: Read but don't do this unless you are installing or
  169. reinstalling a Fax/Modem)
  170.  
  171. Definitions:
  172. COM, Communications-Port (1 - 4).
  173. IRQ, Interrupt-ReQuest (0 - 15).
  174. External Fax/Modem, is placed *ON* a COM-Port!
  175. Internal Fax/Modem, *REPLACES* a COM-Port!
  176.  
  177. A majority of the people I give tech-support to have a hardware conflict
  178. due to improper Internal Fax/Modem installation!
  179.  
  180. NOTE: An External Fax/Modem is placed *ON* a COM-Port!
  181.  
  182. NOTE: An Internal Fax/Modem *REPLACES* a COM-Port!
  183.  
  184. If you are having problems with a Modem, Read the above line until
  185. you comprehend and understand them.
  186.  
  187. External Fax/Modem:
  188. Plug one end of the COM cable into your Fax/Modem and the other end into a
  189. vacant COM-Port.  You will have to know what COM-Port and what IRQ you
  190. plugged into so you can let the software know during software installation.
  191.  
  192. Internal Fax/Modem:
  193. When installing an Internal Fax/Modem, be sure you disable the COM-Port
  194. (located on your IO-Board) you are going to replace.  Then; before
  195. installing the Internal Fax/Modem, test, with the opening screen of
  196. COMTEST1.COM (comes with FaxMail for Windows and *MUST* be run from DOS,
  197. It will *NOT* work while in Windows.), to be sure the COM-Port
  198. really is disabled, and then, AND ONLY THEN, are you ready to install the
  199. "Internal Fax/Modem".  Not doing this properly is the overwhelming major
  200. reason for Modem and other computer problems that maybe to the average
  201. person seem to have no relationship to their Modem, but it does!  If you
  202. are installing on COM2-IRQ3, the COMTEST1.COM opening screen should look
  203. like this BEFORE you install the Fax/Modem.

  205. COM1-IRQ4: UART (16450 Chip) or Equivalent detected.
  206. COM2-IRQ*: No UART/COM/Modem/Serial Port detected.
  207. COM3-IRQ*: No UART/COM/Modem/Serial Port detected.
  208. COM4-IRQ*: No UART/COM/Modem/Serial Port detected.
  209.  
  210. Then you are ready to set the jumpers on your Internal Fax/Modem to
  211. COM2-IRQ3 and insert it into a vacant slot; thus replacing COM2.
  212.  
  213. You can use DEBUG.EXE to help install Modems, but it is not as actuate as
  214. COMTEST1.COM (see Note 5).
  215.  
  216. If you are reinstalling a Fax/Modem on a different COM-IRQ, keep in mind
  217. that you may have to reinstall or run setup on all the software that is
  218. presently using the Fax/Modem.
  219.

  222. If COM1-IRQ4 and COM2-IRQ3 are in use, I would suggest one of the
  223. following configurations:
  224.  COM3-IRQ5,
  225.  COM3-IRQ7,
  226.     or
  227.  COM3-IRQ2
  228. If we would have found COM2 unused we would have configured like this:

  243. FaxMail for Windows will supports COM1 through COM4 on IRQ0 through IRQ15.
  244. But...Before these addresses can be used, your "COM-Port/Fax/Modem" must
  245. first support the configuration and second you must properly configure said
  246. device.

  248. Never skip a COM-Port as the system will go into "conflict-convulsion"
  249. from time to time.  To find a vacant IRQ, run something like SYSONFO.EXE,
  250. etc.  Here is some information on IRQs in the IBM-Compatible.  They are:
  251. IRQ0 - IRQ15.  N/A means not normally available for your Fax/Modem.

  290. As you can see, if IRQ4 is used by COM1, you have to find another IRQ for
  291. COM3.  If you have a COM1-IRQ4 and you use COM3 you will need to use an
  292. alternative IRQ.  The same goes if you are going to use COM4 and you have
  293. a COM2-IRQ3.

  296.  It is best to use COM1-IRQ4 or COM2-IRQ3 for Fax/Modems, as they were
  297.  originally and specifically set aside for communications.  Experience
  298.  has shown me that some Fax/Modems do not preform as well on COM3 and COM4
  299.  using IRQ5, IRQ7 or IRQ2.

  304.  By the way, the problem with this and most system tests, such as
  305.  MSD.EXE, is that they tell you what is suppose to be or what is normally
  306.  on an IRQ.  For instances, when I ran this test, as you can see, it says
  307.  that "LPT1" is on IRQ7.  The fact is I have a Rockwell class 1,2
  308.  Fax/Modem on COM3-IRQ7.  When I ran COMTEST1.COM I got the following
  309.  results:

  353.  At Segment 0040, Offset 0000 DOS keeps a table of ports starting with
  354.  your COM-Ports.  The BIOS and DOS assume that you know that you can not
  355.  skip a COM-port or reuse an IRQ.  If you do, it will raise havoc with
  356.  your system.  If you skip a COM-Port, your system will compress the
  357.  COM-Port table thus making it useless to any program that depend on it.
  358.  For instance, if you have a UART on:

  388. RESOLVING CONFLICTS:
  389.             Example of a conflict and how to resolve it
  390.  
  391.  Lets assume you have a mouse on COM1-IRQ4 and a modem on COM4-IRQ3.
  392.  
  393.  You have a hardware conflict.  You should never skip a COM-Port as the
  394.  system will go into "conflict-convulsion".
  395.  
  396.  Your computer has a COM-Port table at Segment 0040h, Offset 0000h.  It
  397.  assumes you did not skip a port and if you did, it compresses it down to
  398.  where, in this case, your COM4 is entered into the place COM2 should be.
  399.  When you go into Windows, Windows looks at the COM-Port table and thinks
  400.  you have a COM1 and COM2.  When it goes to access COM2, bad things
  401.  happen, because it is not there.
  402.  
  403.  FaxModem Wizard, included in COMTEST1.COM, will tell you what, if
  404.  anything, is on each of your four COM-Ports and which IRQ is connected
  405.  to each COM-Port, COM?-IRQ?.  It will give you a written report about
  406.  your Modem.
  407.  
  408.  Exit Windows and Run COMTEST1.COM.  In this case it will look like this:
  409.  
  410.  COM1-IRQ4:
  411.    UART (16450 Chip) or Equivalent detected.

  424.  jumper-sheet that came with your computer's I/O (input output) board and
  425.  move the jumpers so that COM2 is disabled.  When you can run COMTEST1
  426.  and find a UART only on COM1, you are ready to set the jumpers on your
  427.  modem to COM2-IRQ3 and insert it into any vacant slot.  Be sure to run
  428.  COMTEST1 again to verify that all is well.  When you are finished
  429.  COMTEST1 should say:

  445. BEFORE SOFTWARE INSTALLATION:
  446. Windows only:
  447. If you are going to be using FaxMail for Windows in Windows only, you
  448. might try the "FaxMail for Windows Dynamic All Class Fax/Modem-Driver"
  449. first.
  450.  
  451. DOS and Windows:
  452. If, while installing FaxMail for Windows you find that your Fax/Modem is not
  453. listed, it is possible that one of the selections will work.  For instance,
  454. DoveFax Class 1 and Practical Peripherals Class 1 works with many other
  455. class 1 Fax/Modems.  The {"Universal, Rockwell, Class 2"} will work with
  456. nearly all of the Fax/Modems derived from the "Rockwell Class 2 Accelerator
  457. Kit".  Generic Class 2, Zoom Class 2, ZyXEL Class 2, and Dallas Class 2
  458. Fax/Modem-Drivers are all Class 2 Fax/Modem-Drivers.  There are a lot of
  459. "Class 2" variations, so, if your "Class 2" board does not work with one,
  460. it may work with another.  The
  461.   "Universal, Hayes, Rockwell, Class 1",
  462.   "Universal, Rockwell, Class 1",  and the
  463.   "Universal, Rockwell, Class 2"
  464. Fax/Modem-Drivers are designed to do the job if all else fails.  It should
  465. not always be the first choice because even though it is more versatile, it
  466. may not perform as well as the one recommended by us.  Depending on your
  467. computer, another Fax/Modem-Driver may work better than our recommended one
  468. though.  Sometimes, depending on your computer, COM-Port (FIFO(16550) or
  469. not), the

  578. Everything is explained thoroughly in the FaxMail for Windows help system,
  579. which may be called upon from anywhere in FaxMail for Windows.

  581. If you want to use FaxMail for Windows from within any Windows Application
  582. and/or take advantage of *ALL* the power FaxMail for Windows has, load the
  583. "Control" program that you will find in the FaxMail for Windows Group before
  584. loading any other Windows Applications.

  586. After the Control program is loaded, click on the System button (the small
  587. square button at the top left corner of all windows) and choose SetUp and
  588. configure things *YOUR WAY*.  I suggest that if you are not sure of
  589. something, leave the defaults set as it came to you.  Make a printout of the
  590. defaults in case you change something you do not understand yet.

  593.   If the Fax/Modem-Driver does not load at when you turn on your computer
  594.   it could be because FaxMail for Windows installs its Fax/Modem-Driver
  595.   at the top of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, and other drivers can cancel
  596.   it out.  If this happens to you, move the Fax/Modem-Driver command:

  598.   to a spot just before the Windows load command.

  602. HELPFUL HINTS:
  603.                         "Silent Answer"
  604. Silent Answer requires the support and cooperation of the remote sending
  605. Fax/Modem/Machine with your receiving Fax/Modem.  If the sending
  606. Fax/Modem/Machine does not support "Silent Answer" by sending the "CNG"
  607. tone, you will lose that Fax!  Please read *all* of this area before using
  608. "Silent Answer".  If you still want "Silent Answer", here is what it does
  609. and how to implement it.
  610.  
  611.  Silent answer let one telephone line be used for two purposes;
  612.  receiving FAXes with the Fax/Modem, and receiving voice calls with
  613.  an answering machine or telephone.  When set to this mode, the
  614.  Fax/Modem lets your answering machine answer all incoming calls.
  615.  If it detects Fax "CNG" tones, it routes the call to FaxMail for
  616.  Windows.  Otherwise, it just sits silently on the phone line while
  617.  you or your answering machine takes the call.
  618.  
  619.  When the phone rings and after the second ring the Fax/Modem will
  620.  start monitoring the telephone line.  If it detects a Fax tone, it
  621.  will receive the Fax.  If it does not detects a fax tone, it will do
  622.  nothing.
  623.  
  624. Silent Answer hardware installation
  625.  When installing the Fax/Modem, DO NOT plug the answering machine into
  626.  the telephone jack on the back of the Fax/Modem.  Instead, do one of
  627.  the following:
  628.  
  629. a. Plug the answering machine and Fax/Modem into different wall jack
  630.    (i.e. jacks in different rooms).
  631.  
  632. b. Plug the answering machine into a wall jack and the Fax/Modem into
  633.    the answering machine.
  634.  
  635.  
  636. c. If your answering machine has some kind of phone-jack switching;
  637.    use this method. You must locate the two devices on separate
  638.    extensions to make silent answer work correctly.  This means you
  639.    can not plug the answering machine into the Fax/Modem or vise
  640.    versa.  You can split a single extension with a duplex jack
  641.    adapter.  Radio Shack commonly carries these, part number 279-357
  642.    for $4.49.
  643.  
  644.  Also, if you have an older answering machine that does NOT
  645.  automatically turn itself off when it detects that a person or the
  646.  Fax/Modem has answered the call, you need a $7.95 adapter from
  647.  Radio Shack, part#43-107.  This adapter disconnects the answering
  648.  machine from the phone line when the call is answered.  It goes
  649.  between the answering machine and the wall jack.
  650.  
  651. Note:
  652.  The device that is picking up the line initially, must answer
  653.  after, and not before, the second ring.  This means you should
  654.  set it to 3 for best results.  If no other device picks up the
  655.  line by the time the number of rings that FaxMail for Windows
  656.  is set to is reached, FaxMail for Windows will answer it and
  657.  process a Fax.

  661. To activate Silent Answer
  662.  Load the FaxMail for Windows 'Control' program and click on the
  663.  <System> Button, <Setup> Button and on the Silent Answer <Check>
  664.  Button.  Set the number of rings until we answer to four and set
  665.  your answering-machine to three rings.  If the Silent Answer
  666.  <Check> Button is inactive and gray, your Fax/Modem does not
  667.  support Silent Answer.

  670.            How to enable auto-load (registered version only)
  671.  
  672. When you boot-up, you have a choice as to whether you want to load the
  673. FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver or not.  If you plan to always load the
  674. FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver, you can place y or Y behind the
  675. Fax/Modem-Driver.  Here are two examples:

  725. TM.EXE.  The following Batch File will Disable the "Fax/Modem-Driver" load
  726. "Telemate" and when you exit the BBS program (Telemate) it will "Enable"
  727. the Fax/Modem-Driver so you can resume FAXing.  At the DOS Prompt:
